Meet Lara Boman, a Graduate College Teaching Fellow and doctoral student in the Exercise Physiology program. Read on to learn more about Lara's favorite places in Kent, what they enjoy doing in free time and what advice they have for incoming graduate students.

Where is your hometown?

I grew up in Minnesota, but most recently moved to Ohio from South Dakota.

What do you like most about living in/near Kent? Do you have a favorite local spot or activity?

I actually live in Ashland, but I've loved exploring and competing in local trail and road races.

What is your favorite KSU memory?

Walking on to campus my first day and being so proud that I was starting my Ph.D. A runner-up memory: I had moved across the country and started full-time in my program mid-year after being out of school for several years. My birthday is early in the year, and the GAs in my department all got together to give me a birthday card. It was a small moment that meant a lot to me, and felt so supportive after a period of uncertainty as I transitioned from a full-time job to being a full-time student.

What are some differences you've noticed in being a graduate student (expectations, pressures, visibility, etc.) than those of an undergraduate student?

As a graduate student you're not just a student. You may also be an instructor, a researcher or both in addition to coursework. The role of graduate student requires more maturity, leadership and initiative than that of undergraduate student.

What advice do you have for incoming graduate students?

Know your "why" and priorities as a person, and let your "why" and priorities as a graduate student follow.

Fun Fact 黄色直播 Me:

I've deadlifted 440 pounds (200 kilograms) in competition!
